Captain Gopinath speaking

Last week I had the privilege to hear Capt Gopinath of Air Deccan speak in person. Our organization had invited him to speak on innovation. I had seen couple of TV interviews earlier; I was impressed with his simplicity and analytical ability and was looking forward to hear him. The auditorium was overflowing with people.

Capt. Arrived 5 mins late, there were the inevitable jokes with comparison with Air Deccan. But once he started, people were captivated by him. He had a pretty good career in army but soon he quit his job to start of as a farmer on barren land with just Rs 6000/. He told us how he doggedly pursued to make his dream come true. He talked of his innovation in making the barren land start yielding organically when everybody was after the chemical fertilizers. How got the loan on the literally useless land. He went on to become a successful silk farmer. He was recognized by Rolex Company for it.

He then went on to start Deccan aviation a helicopter company a first in India. He started of from nothing again. He persuaded a Japanese company to provide him a helicopter to start of with. The Japanese had hesitated to sell him the helicopter because of political instability, but he exploited the instability and the subsequent elections to expand. He could also grab the opportunity because the chief ministers of states were competing for investments. He also did not forget to tell us that. He did not pay single paisa as bribe to get the license, but he did not get give up for 3 years. I missed the Air Deccan part.

Overall, the take away was, you can innovate in small and every thing you do. Be it farming, marketing or selling yourself or the big ideas, but most important thing was not to give up. He often quoted Einstein who said something like “I am no different from others, but only I stay on the problem longer than others do”.

One important think he told us was instead of complaining about politicians and doing nothing, take it as given and work around it. Most politicians are guys who have come up from the rough and tough world. People who do not have anything else (other profession) get into politics. They have come from the world of survival of fittest literally. So let us take it as reality and work with it. I personally felt it was a very relevant message. We literate people have become arm chair commentators bitching, whining and complaining but doing nothing.

Capt. Gopinath as a person is a likeable man common man of RK Laxman who also is his logo. He resembles him. He is simple, clever, a good analyst, a person who can express his views in a simple clear way others can easily relate to. He often related to the small innovations he did as went on. This reinforced the message very clearly.

What do you care what other people think? by Richard Feynman

Got to read Feynman after a very long time. This book is more of his love life and challenger shuttle disaster investigation. He is much older but the same inquisitiveness is there. He writes about his love. He married his love despite knowing that it was a matter of time she died. She did pass away soon. It nice to know he was a wonderful human.

One thing that stuck his the way his father taught him when he was young. The key was making him (Feynman) learn ‘why’ instead of just the description, names and mugging. I Guess it is never too young to start teaching.

Greater part of the book is about the investigation into Challenger shuttle crash, which killed 7 astronauts. Important thing that comes out is the systematic investigation. He also writes about the team balances within the investigating group. He has put the crash reason in a simple way for people to understand. It was because of rubber seals which failed at low temperatures. This problem was known but was not taken as risk. It was interpreted that if it had not failed previously, it could not fail again. It is a assumption most of make in like to see things move on. The shuttle flights were flown at very high odds of failure.

The book is a good read, but not as much fun as ‘Surely you must be joking’, but still an interesting read. There is quite a bit of technical jargon. The mature and older Feynman is reflected in the book.

Inhuman or Insensitive?

On the way back from Jog tour we saw a buffalo which had met with an accident and a few people gathered around it. It probably was dead, it wasn’t moving, its head was at an odd angle and eyes open, this was in the rural part of Karnataka.

Contrast, we took the ring road from Tumkur road, soon we saw another accident, a truck had run over a bike, the bike was under the front wheel of the truck and a person was lying on the road almost at the center. Hundreds of vehicles were passing by. Not a single vehicle stopped by INCLUDING us. After we passed we were discussing whether we should have stopped. We thought after all he was dead and there was no point in stopping. We came up with reasons why we shouldn’t. Response of police, we may have to spend time running around.

Well I realized we were justifying ourselves with lame reasons for not stopping.

I could not answer 2 questions to myself.

1. How did I know he was dead? If he was not, am I not guilty of letting a person die?

2. Assuming he was dead, what if he were a known person?

Inhuman or Insensitive? Probably both and more.

Time to change and quickly.

Shivanasamudra trip

Planned the trip at 7:30 Am and started at 9 AM. Started off in 3 cars maruthi 800 cars. One of the cars broke down 7 kms from Ramanagara, we spent about 2 1/2 hours getting the mechanics to examine, finally decided we get it towed to Bangalore. Later we found it was a blown engine due to blocked engine oil. There are no Maruthi service stations on Sundays from Bangalore to Mysore. The help desk was not sure if there any authorized service centers in the stretch. Smell a business opportunity.

Had lunch and finally reached Shivanasamudra at 4:30 PM 125 kms took 6 ½ hrs including breakdown, lunch and 5 kms of no road.

The trip was actually worth it. Cauvery was full and the falls at Gaganachukki and Barachukki was absolutely gorgeous. When I had gone with friends about 8-9 years back, there was hardly any water we had gone to the top of the falls. Ramu and I had taken a nude bath on top of the falls. There were no people.

This time it was filled with thousands of people. There was hardly any place to stand and watch the falls from the front. Spent about an hour and started back. On the way back, the other car broke down and did not start. The mechanic at maddur did not have anybody. I used my car to tow the other car for 5-6 kms. By the time I finished towing my car had a flat tire. We found the other car had a electric short circuit. When it rains it pours. We had dosas at Maddur tiffany’s and returned home at 11 PM.

It was a trip to remember because of break downs and partially for the beautiful falls.

Jog - 2 Top view

Next stop was Jog again, this time it was from the top. There were so many people, it was more like a Jog Jatre, with lots of vendors lined up on the road to the top. Once we went to the view point, it was more like Majestic in Bangalore oops Bengaluru. My friends did not bother to some down. Well Down means to the top of the falls from the view point near British bungalow.

Oh! Boy people had gone crazy; men, women and kids were looking down from the edge of the falls. Men were holding the women and children to help them have a wonderful view. Yes from the edge of the falls looking down at 900 feet vertical drop. People were sitting, lying down, hanging and having a look down. It was like this all around the horseshoe shaped cliff. (One can’t make out from the front view that the falls is horseshoe shaped). Off course everybody wanted to have the Mungaru Male view of the falls. Infact people were talking about it.

To be honest even I got bitten by the looking down bug, I sat on the edge of the cliff and looked at the bottom of the falls, initially I was scared but once I looked down it was not so scary. I enjoyed the view of the water falling down into the emerald green pool formed by Sharavathi. It is a sight to be remembered. I shot it all with my handycam.

I was as irresponsible as everybody, looks like it needs couple of deaths to wake up the tourism department to stop people from looking down. But the view was worth the risk.

Back to Bengaluru

Drove from Sagar to Tarikere, Accent viva is a nice car to drive. The car is easy on driver, at 4 and 5 th gear the response of the engine is wonderful. Reaching 120 – 130 kmph is very easy. I thought the car had a bit of understeer or may be I was taking on the curves too fast. It doesn’t strain the driver much. After that Sridhar and Ramu drove rached home at 1 PM. We had covered 950 kms in 2 days

Unchalli falls aka Lushigton falls

After the Jogs disappointment, we planned to see the Unchalli falls. We made Siddapur as our base. Road from Jog to Siddapura is not very good. Siddapura to Unchalli road is pretty good.

Route to falls. Need to take a left after siddhapura town on Siddapura Sirsi road. Need to travel for about 20 Kms till one sees a board at a junction. Unchalli falls is 4.7 Kms from the junction.

One has to park the vehicle were the road ends near a small shop. The trek to view the falls is about ½ kms and is pretty steep at some points.

We came to the view point all we could see is white mist and lot of sound from the falls, felt were in cloud. Met an old school friend who came up from view point at a lower height, he was drenched. He told us to go down for the better view. We started climbing down the steps. It started raining. Soon we realized it wasn’t raining it was the spray from the falls. We were soon drenched from head to toe before we reached the view point. It is about 200 steps. Soon after we reached the second view point, the wind changed direction and the spray cleared for some time. The view was awesome. It was a really huge falls. Narrow at the head and becoming wider as it comes down. There is thick virgin forest on the either side of falls and the valley. In the raining season there was lots of water in river Aghanashini. It was a wonderful sight. It was like a Christian bride dressed in all white with a flowing skirt below the waist, covered in misty veil, who let us have a look at her once in a while when the veil lifted.

We had a look at it for few times. It was wonderful experience, especially after the Jog’s disappointment. The photos Unchalli falls on net were generally taken in summer and from the bottom. They don’t really do justice the Majestic falls.

There were visitors in about 4 cars, where as Jog had 1000 times the visitors. But this hidden beauty just 45 Kms from jog made our trip wonderful. Hope it doesn’t get commercialized too much.

The drive to and from Unchalli Siddapura itself is wonderful. There are lush green paddy fields on the flat land and a thick forest as we climb. There is a view point on the road where the river Aghanashini curves between mountains make a picturesque sight.

Jog -1 Front

What a disappointment awaited us. There was hardly any water falling, it was little more than what we normally saw in photos. But the setting of Jog is majestic, it is much bigger that the picture I had in mind, the sheer drop of over 900 feet itself is mind blowing. The dark rocks against the greenery made a very nice sight. Kp and me started to go down, well KP backed of at the start itself. Everybody was coming up and nobody going down. KP scared me saying it takes 3 hours to come up. I did not believe him. On the way down I saw 2 other guys also going down. We started to run down the huge steps. Half way through my thighs started shaking with strain. One lady had fallen on the path because of fatigue. People were trying to make her get up. I simply ran down. I felt the hole was bottomless. Even after seeing the foot of the falls, it took quite sometime for me to reach it.

When I reached the bottom, I was the only guy heading down; I had left behind the other 2. I relished the view, It was a wonderful sitting alone, well almost seeing the majestic falls. I saw to other falls apart from Raja, Rani, Rocket, Roarer. It has been quite sometime. I did not know whether they were new or I did not just remember. Took pictures in video and stills, washed my face and checked the time. It was 6:36 and was getting dark, Oops had I made a mistake going down alone? There were few people (including some drunks) and vendors who were going up almost in slow motion. I climbed a bit may be 20-30 feet. I ran out of breath, my legs were on verge of collapse. I pushed a bit, one the vendors saw me urged me not to hurry and take it easy. I drank a Maaza and slowly started off, could not climb much. I was on all fours, it gradient was pretty steep, It helped climbing on all fours. After going further, there were almost no people and was becoming dark by the minute. Made my mind not to stop would go at a steady pace. I was thinking of Tour de France riders for inspiration, soon I reached a family who were climbing slowly and reached a stream. I washed my self and my mouth. The sweetness of cool drink had made very tired. Felt refreshed, made up the remaining distance pretty quickly. I finally could see the view point check the watch, it was only 7:05. Wow I could not believe it. My climb was less than half an hour, wanted to reach the top in next one minute. I went up quickly, saw my friends waiting for me check the time. It was 7:06. I had made it to the top in ½ hour flat.

Drank some water, ate some pineapples which tasted like heaven. Then started for Siddhapura Inspection Banaglow. Siddhapura is about 16 kms. After 3-4 kms the roads are pretty bad.

Stay at Siddhapura

The person at IB Hegdekar took very good care of us. Nice dinner was served. Rooms and toilets were built well, but maintained badly. Didn’t feel sleeping on the bed. All 5 men slept on a single double cot. Well it was warm on cozy…. It was link old times before marriage.

Had breakfast in a hotel treated by Hegdekar, had Sira (Kesari bath) and a dish like puri made of banana, midha, etc. I was good. We left for Unchalli falls.

The trip 1st stop Chitradurga

When we friends met, three of us planned to go to Jog after seeing the pictures it overflowing in newspapers. But five of us (Sridhar, Kp, Ramu, Srinath, myself) went. Prasanna would have joined if he were here. It was 13 years since I went to Jog. Wanted to see it.

Going with friends without family was like old times pre marriage days. We were pretty much excited to go. When I told this to dear wifey, there was usual noise, but it was more of a formality. She actually did not complain as I much as I expected her to do so.

We went in Sridhar’s Accent Viva. We decided to take the Chitradurga-Shimoga route instead of Arisikere route. The Golden quadrilangle road is a wow. But the toll road to Tumkur is not as good but still have to pay for it, what an irony.

We had breakfast at Kamat upahara. The food was BAD, was very disappointed. While driving on the quadrilangle on the Sridhar hit 170 kmph. The vehicle was surprisingly stable. I was surprised that a diesel engine of 84 bhp could hit the speed with 5 people inside. On the way, we saw Karnataka tourism board mentioning about Chitradurga fort. We decided we wanted to see Obhavvana kindi, she always holds a special place in our hearts for her bravery.

We reached there not many tourists. It was surprisingly lack of tourist activity in the town for place with so many places to visit.

The fort seems to be pretty well maintained. We enlisted a guide, he said Rs 250/- we said ok without bargaining. Cursed ourselves later for behaving like IT people. He took as around, went through the 5 of the 7 doors of elu suithina kote. Remain 2 are in the town. Saw Ganesha temple carved out of a rock. Saw rocks in form of Elephants, rabbit, boat (Hence the name Chitra-Durga) Akka thangi kola, finally reached Obavva’s house. It was just a small space few sq feet below couple of big rocks. Thought the kingdom may not be rich, asked the guide what was the source of income for people, no convincing answers, went ahead. He showed us the Kindi where Hyder Ali’s troops entered. We also went around the boulder and entered through the kindi. We were acting like kids. It was fun.

We saw one tower dedicated to a pregnant lady who was buried alive to impress gods. Pathetic fellows these kings were.

Climbed the Gali gopuras?? Had a jolada roti oota and started. We then realized we were late we spent 3-3.5 hrs there. The road from CD to Holalkere was pretty bad. We got stuck at a railway crossing. Srinath was driving the vehicle. I really pushed hard to prevent him from stopping anywhere. Road from Shimoga to Jog was pretty good. We reached Jog at about 6 PM.

Chocolates without cacao

There is a report on some of the chocolate manufacturers wanting to make chocolates using vegetable oils and not cacao in US. Well, who is stopping them? But the problem is they want to call it chocolate. A trick to take consumers for a ride. They want to benefit from the cheaper inputs, but want to still call it chocolates and make money out of consumers by misleading them. The contents are generally in fine print where nobody reads it.

The other side of argument is as long as people like what they get and pay the price why not?

Well the brand chocolate brand has been build around cacao. The Cacao is from the equatorial countries, which are generally not well off. That’s whom these manufacturers want to hit. Lower the demand for cacao and push the prices down. Would they dare to do it if cacao was grown was grown in a developed country?

It is an outrageous plan. Why not call it vegolates? Where do they find buyers for that?

The Alchemist

Long time since I had read a good novel. It is very different from what I am used to, its probably because I don't read much of fantasy. It is about following ones dreams.
It is an inspiring fantasy novel. It is an entertainer with an interesting message. No wonder it is a terrific seller.
Message is follow your dream, there will be up and downs. It about the journey and not just the end. In the end one has lead a richer life with experience. What appeals is the simplicity and the
message it reinforces without being preachy.
Its about a Shepard who dreams of finding treasure near the Pyramids. It is about his journey, he loses everything thrice. He is tempted to stop because he finds love, money, but he still pursues his dream.
Hope to catch on Paulo Coelho more.

Tour de France

Followed the Tour de France for the 6th year, I picked the habit of watching this when I was
lonely in China. Well Coming to Tour de France, It is an amazing feat of human endurance cycling for 2 and 1/2 tousand kms in about 2 weeks at av speed of 40 Kms over mountains and
cities. It also showcases the beautiful France.
I really enjoyed when Armstrong was fighting Ulrich and Basso. Fun is watching the breakaway
fighting to avoid the Peleton catching up and the most exciting of course the sprint to the finish. The team work is good to watch, the way other riders support, protect their leading man especially the discovery team.
2 years have been disappointing mainly because of doping. Saving grace is Rabobank had the courage to withdraw yellow jersey holder when he was sure of winning the tour and because he lied. Really appreciate the courage shown, 2 other team Astana and Cofidis withdrew their teams. Contrast Landis is still fighting a failed test on technicality.
Other obervation, it is predominately (or is it only) white, never seen a black african or Asian. Well Hunter is from Africa but white. Heard commentator mention development is being
done in Ethiopia, Eriteria. Surprised that Chinese, Japanese and Koreans are not there yet.
Guess is matter of few years that Africans and Asians will join the tour.
Spain has 6 of the 10 people, just amazing.

iPod Nano

I asked my sis returning from US to get me an iPod nano. Though I did not own any apple product, I have been tracking them all. I told her to get me a black one, she said for 2 MB that was not available and brought a white one. I had had not seen one earlier.

When she opened that after she came, everybody at home was stunned by it sexy looks. Though nobody knew what it exactly it was they loved its sleek looks. Even my colleagues who knew about iPod were mightily impressed by the design (good looks) and size. For me, I fell I for its looks, I had expected it to be smaller that it was, because its photos always came in a white man's large hands.

It is a very fine piece of engineering, that the reason I was willing to pay the premium over other players. It is so easy and instinctive to use you don’t need a manual to use it including the click wheel. No wonder there is no bulky manual that comes with it. Apple's user manual is slimer as its player :-). I just connected the iPod to laptop and charged it. Copied all the songs to iPod, but when I tried using the player, I could not songs. Then I realized I needed iTunes. OK, but wasn’t iTunes a online shop for buying songs? So I called my friends, Sridhar said iPod requires iTunes software and I have to buy songs. What the hell, I had read on Apple web site that it plays mp3, now the f*$#!@ does not play it. I was wondering how to sell it. I could not afford to pay 99c for a each song. But back of my mind I knew this could not be possible. I checked the apple site in detail, I realized that iTunes was a software that I had to download. I downloaded it the 36 MB s/w, took me about 4 hours using the dial up connection. Next day I explored the s/w, it was pretty user friendly, I realized that I had to convert the mp3 or any other format to AAF format using iTunes. I also found organizing it into the folders was a problem had to do it using the itunes by naming each song based on its details. Had to give details of each song. It is pretty painful, but the originals did not have these details. The sync up worked very well.

Coming to the quality of music it really beautiful, it would have been better if equalizers are given. But the given the simplicity of design it made sense not to complicate usage. I can easily make up the quality of recording of each song. One big problem with ear phone it is designed for a bigger western ear. The bass is on top of left ear phone, when I normally plug it into my ear, the bass is muffled. I have to place it at an odd angle, which is bit uncomfortable.

One thing that I see is the total lack of features. It needs a FM player atleast. Whenever I see the recording feature from FM on other players, I really envy. Apple probably did this to sell more songs which was a win win for apple and record companies which made sense.

Overall, I don’t regret its lack of features, it makes up with its looks and simplicity. You need a comp to use, download or upload music. But looks like it may not last for long because the mobiles with mp3 feature is going to overrun it. Very few people would like to carry 2 gadgets. Well apple it seems has already lined up iPhone nano, cant wait to lay my hands on it. What happens to my iPod nano. I will live with nano for sometime.

Trip to Kodagu - Kushalanagar

We reached Kushalanagar at about 1 PM. We took an auto to the Veerabhoomi resort. The auto driver charged us Rs 25. Unfortunately for us, at about 50 meters from the entrance there was so much slush from previous day rains, we could not even walk. A bus had got stuck. We paid another 20 and went around and landed in the resort.

It is a very nice resort at the foot of a hill, with manicured garden with some cottages which looked like huts. It had a wall built around like a fort with some carts and cannon in between. It is a picturesque place. Nice warm welcome from the people there. The waiters are dressed like the old soldiers.

But the standard room we took was a disappointment. It was not maintained well. No cable and telephone when we entered, it was repaired it for us after escalation.

We hired an auto; we negotiated Rs 200 for a trip to Golden temple and Nisarga dhama. At Rs 50 per hour looked reasonable.

The golden temple was very good. It is situated in a nice place at the centre of lush green fields. We entered the gates we saw lots and lots of monks. There were lot of kid monks, they seems to be no different from the kids I see everywhere playing, fighting, etc. Was wondering how it is to be a monk.

Entering the temple was a very new experience. I knew the Buddha were big did not really expect it to be that big. The main statue was a usual peaceful looking statue other 2 were looked totally different from what Buddha was to me. In fact I though one of them was a devil, Rishica was actually scared. I realized that it was a Buddha after reading it. My experience in china and Hong Kong had not made me wiser about forms of Buddha. Took lots of photos and then went to Nisargadhama.

We went around the island formed by Cauvery River. The river was full and flowing swiftly. It's a nice place full of bamboo trees, with rabbit and deer park. Children enjoyed playing with rabbits. We literally had to drag them away. But there was no elephant ride that day spent about 2 hours there. By the time we came out it had started drizzling children were tired and started acting cranky, it made us tired and angry. We went back to the resort. We were told that we may not be let into Harangi dam so we decided to skip it. We decided we were going to relax the next day without visiting Dubare elephant camp.

Evening there was a culture show by artists in Veerabhoomi. Initially I was skeptical on how it would be. But they were pros. They kept us entertained for 2 hours. Infact tourists staying in other places came to the resort to see the performance. It was a mixture of song, dance magic show, jokes. There was a fire dance by one of the guys for the Rajkumar song from the movie Ashwamedha. It was really good. It was the first time I saw anybody fire eating and spitting kerosene on a torch, it was an amazing sight. Kids also had there share of fun.

I and kids joined the dance party at the end. Rishica really enjoyed dancing.

We had dinner, food was descent. We did not risk trying out anything new; we had akki and normal roti with dal fry.

Next morning, we had a good bath had breakfast and let kids play in play area. We showed the artist the video recording of their performance they were mighty happy. We had a early lunch and left Kushalnagar.

Took the KSRTC volvo bus at 1 Pm. we reached Bangalore at 6 PM inspite having 4 breaks.

Trip to Kodagu in Madikeri - 1

I initially planned to go to Kodaikanal for my 5th anniversary. I cancelled it because it started raining. Handling kids in a 10 hr bus ride was going to be tough for 2 of us.

We decided to go be closer home viz Kodagu.

We planned to stay a day in Madikeri and a day in Kushalnagar. We booked for a day in Kaushalnagar on Veerbhoomi resorts and a day in homestay in madekari. I searched for homestays on need. They looked pretty expensive. One of my colleagues had noted down a number when he was in Madikeri gave me. The guy whom i called Nanda promised me I will thank him for making him stay in a house. It was a single bedroom house close to Raja's seat costing Rs 750 per day in including breakfast.

Decided not drive in my M800 car, took a Volvo bus. It reached madekari sharp 1 PM. The homestay owner Prithivi took me to his place in an auto. It was raining pretty heavily in Madikeri. Packed out lunches and went to homestay. The homestay was located about 500 mts from Raja seat on a hillock. It had a beautiful view of Madikeri. It was nice cozy single bedroom house, just enough for us and 2 kids with option for making coffee.

We had out lunch and planned to go Abbi falls, Omkareshwara temple and Raja's seat. Prithivi aranged for an auto and bargained for Rs 180. The rains very lashing and there was no power in Madikeri since previous night. The auto had adequate cover to protect us from getting wet.

We reached Abbi falls, luckily for us the it was just drizzling. It was a small trek down in a plantation to reach the falls. Luckliy the kids decided to walk down.

The sight of falls was awesome, the rains had made the river full (is it Cauvery?). It was very nice sight. Last time when I had gone there, we could get into the water. Now there was no question of it. There is a hanging bridge for people to stand and relish the spray of the falls. Took photos and recorded in handy cam. Best part was getting wet in the spray, spent an hour or so. While coming back it was a climb we had to carry the kids and the bag. It was a bit tiring.

Then we went to the Omkareshwara temple, this is inside Madikeri. The temple kalyani was overflowing and water had flooded the entrance. The auto driver Jayram took us round to another entrance which was on higher ground. It was a nice temple. me and Kids stayed at the entrance watching the overflowing kalyani. Prathibha finished her prayers and came back.

We then went Raja's seat. It is a very small park with a very beautiful view. Last time when I had visited I was rather disappointed. Now the park is well maintained.

We took the toy train, charge for it was Rs 5 but there had to be min 20 people. We were about 10 people we paid 10 per head asked the driver to run it. The kids atleast enjoyed the ride.

We rested for the rest of the evening. We requested the homestay guy to send us dinner as it had started raining and there was no power in Madikeri. He sent us so much food, lot of food went waste. We had a candle light dinner. It was not a romantic dinner, with Rishabh touching the lantern and starting to wail. Putting the kids to sleep was a big achievement and we were glad to sleep.

Next morning we decided not to go out any where. Morning was Madikari was covered with mist. It was a beautiful sight from the hilltop home, spent time filming and relaxing. Had a loooong bath. Luckily a gas heater was installed. Ate a nice break fast prepared by Prithivi's household. I actually liked the idlis (not exactly my favorite).

Prithivi dropped us of to bus stop, we took the local bus to Kushalnagara.

Whose money is it anyway

The Indian government finally decided to merge Indian (formerly IA) and Air India as Air India. Then the airlines unveiled a new logo. It is a nice logo. This merger has been talked about for atleast 2 years. After the talk of merger started the Indian Airlines decided to rename itself as Indian, came up with new logo. They also started painting the airplanes with new logo, which wasn't too good.
But the question is why this exercise when it was known that there was a real possibility of merger. how much money was spent (rather wasted) for branding when it was known it wouldn't last. How much many would be spent on coming up with new logo, printing, new uniforms, painting the aero planes, only to be redone all over again. Why waste so much when it is making losses. Does nobody care for this wastage. Nobody in government would bother because the beneficiaries of this exercise would be known too well to the minister and officials.
It is all public money enjoyed by organization close govt and officials.
We used to say Whose father's house knot goes (literal translation of Kannada saying yar appana mane gantu oithu). But solutions I have no idea.

News Channels

ISRO launched a commercial satellite for an Italian company, with this we enter an elite club of Russia, US, China, France, japan. Doesnt it look like super power club either economic or miltary. The news channels headlines are still passport scam, UP election. Come on we need to be more positive about ourselves, we need to get out this business of looking at negative or trivial things. Not that we ignore those.
But once in a while we get good things why not hype it up. Is there analysis of the potential it has what it means to India's standing. No the media would rather analyse how much was spent in the big
wedding. Another question, if one is interested in watching wedding progress why the
hell should he/she watch news. Is regular news watcher interested in the wedding
progress. OK there is a big wedding fine, but damm give me something better than that, I dont watch it news for that.
I need a descent Indian english movie channel. CNN started like one, looks like it is not different from others.

Parents expectation on Children

Teenager commits suicide unable to score enough marks. I used to think why children have become like this and used to tell myself that I will never have expectations from my children. I will leave them to enjoy their lives. Bulls shit, even I have such high expectation from my little ones and was terribly disappointed when they dint perform. I have now once again promised myself that I will not have too much of expectation, let me see if I can live up my own promise.

Today was the last day of pre-nursery school for my 2 yrs 8 months kids. There was a fancy dress organized. Yesterday we had a rehearsal at home. They were wonderful. Today I went to the school taking leave. My son refused to remove his shirt and stuck to us. My daughter simply refused to wear the dhoti. When one of the kids was dancing both of them promptly went on to the stage to dance. I, my wife and my mom were terribly disappointed that they did not go to the stage and perform. Almost all the kids dressed up and went onto the stage except for one other kid. Rest of the time my children were normal playing around with their friends.

I was angry with my kids almost scolding them. Now I wonder what would be going through their minds, first of all they were so embarrassed or probably dint like the dress we wanted them to wear on top of it they must be wondering why the parents are angry with them.

Now I think I realize how much pressure the children must be going through when they commit suicide. If I have so much expectation from almost babies and being aware that I should not apply pressure, I can imagine how much pressure the parents will be applying on adolescents and teenagers without the realization....

FM radio Bangalore

I normally listen to FM on my way to and back from office. Suddenly I was surprised to hear mostly Kannada songs on Mirchi. Trying to understand why the he sudden change, I concluded that this is what will be differentiating then from others.

Analyzing further one can differentiate the channels as ones with a USP (Unique selling proposition) and other without. Ones in first category include Radio City, Fever and now Mirchi. Earlier they had this combination of Hindi and some Kannada with Kannada speaking RJs which is similar Radio one, Big and S FM with proportions of Kannada and Hindi varying, but you could not really differentiate between them.

City is clear they play mostly Hindi, some English and Kannada and rarely mix them up.
Fever no RJ only Hindi and English mostly songs, don’t know how long will they do that without too much of advertising, its matter of time before ads catch up.

S FM started out as Kannada only with some lousy RJing. But they changed both RJ and mixture. I think they just lost the market to Mirchi. You can’t really differentiate between ONE, BIG and S.

Then there are Rainbow and Vividha barathi, some how it seems they are in their own world, Rainbow was popular when only city was there, now not sure how many will relly listen except for old faithful.

Vegetarian's adventure in China

China is so different from in India though we have been neighbors and have few thousands of years civilization. It has been parallel development. Food is a prime example of it. Before going there a few years back I had heard it was tough for Indian non veggies and tougher for veggies. My company with Customer Company had arranged for Chinese cooks for cooking Indian food. I will reserve my writing on that food now. Well my adventure in hotels was great.

I am basically a vegetarian by choice for 23 years. But I like eggs.

The very first day, I was taken by my colleagues to Mac Donald’s. They had warned me that the Chinese will feed us anything and everything. Being an egg eater, I ordered egg burger. The first Mac burger was good but something was not alright at after first few chews. I thought it was a
different taste in China and my colleagues scare. With next bite I was pretty sure that there was some meat in it. I opened it and found a thin layer of meat. We went back and asked what it was, luckily the manager knew English and he told me it was Cow's meat. For me it dint matter
which animal I just did not want to eat any of them. My new colleagues were outraged that an Hindu was made to eat beef. One of them starting fighting saying why was it mentioned as egg burger when it had beef in it. Manager said by default burger came with beef and egg was he
additional thing. The manager took it back and offered only eggs burger. I said no thanks and made it only "Vegetables" burger.

Next morning I went to the English speaking secretary asked her to write vegetarian. But I discovered that there was not equivalent word for Vegetarian in Chinese. So she wrote "only vegetables" on chit of paper, which I carried for rest of my china trip.

One of the English speaking Chinese cooks told me that they eat anything
that moves on land, air and in water except humans. Amazing guys.

My next adventure was in a zoo. We went to restaurant in the zoo. We chose Singapore noodles for lunch, with help of a friendly English speaking engineer we told the waiter we waiter noodles without cow, lamb, fish, chicken, etc. We got the noodles which was quite tasty it had salt, some
spice and lots of carrots. After a tiring walk around the zoo we relished the noodles initially after some time someday mentioned the carrots were stale. Then we realized it was somehow not OK. So we asked the English speaking Chinese to ask the waiter what it was. The answer was pig's meat. Oh shit we were outraged. We the guy why this was put in spite of telling him not put those things. Waiter told the English Chinese that we had not mentioned to him about pork, so he had not put only pork and not any other meat. We did not know how to explain we did not eat any meat.

One more time was when after explaining to English speaking Pizza hut waiter I wanted vegetarian pizza, he still brought me a pizza with chicken topping. This time I ate one slice and then sent it back through manager for veg one. Pizza hut used to be a regular haunt.

Late in my stay after 3 1/2 months we discovered that there was a vegetarian Chinese restaurant in Shenzhen. The concept of vegetarian was there after all. Either it was forgotten or not at all popular or they did not know humans could exist eating vegetables.

Looking back probably was the only time in life I could are will taste beef and pork. It was an experience to remember.

Dream world

Dreams for me are very interesting. My dreams seem to be more exciting and vivid than my real life. Some how I have not been able read Freud. I should just for the reason my dreams are so many and with lots of varieties. My belief is it just my intense thoughts modified. Sometimes my dreams surprise me making me feel like reading Freud. Not that I expect myself to believe in what he has researched, just for the fun of it.

I used to tell my friends about these and they ask about it when I used to meet them.

Best ones are wild chases like in movies, chasing on foot and also being chased. It is sometimes chasing the thieves. It used to be lots of fun sometimes there is rush of adrenaline. I do lot of innovative things, fight with people. It used to be often when I was younger, now this has reduced may be going with the thought process these days. It probably is my unfulfilled desire to have an adventure filled life.

Negative dreams

I can be sure I will dream of impending big thing on the next morning like traveling, some function, interviews it is mostly negatively like me missing the time, going late to interview. I wake up in-between and assure my self nothing has gone wrong. Well the worse thing is it continues sometimes in the same form or slightly different form. People normally say early morning dreams come true. Well lesser said the better. This probably is because of the stress I am under.

Irritating dreams:

About work and making reporting that I have to do next day or two about bosses asking me for report and me struggling for inputs. I have enough of people at work on top of it they haunt me during nights. Rarely do I get pleasant dreams of work place. Even if I get I probably forget. Reason same as above.

Surprising dreams:

I dream of people whom I could have seen once or twice not even have spoken them. I talk to them as though I have known them very well. I would not have even thought of them for years or months. This is one thing I am unable relate.

Pleasant dream:

Probably forgotten by the time I wake up. I think it is like my daily life nothing much to remember.

Other dreams:

I used have rare erotic dreams, BTW very few.

Sometimes I dream like I have gone to office, school, college partially dressed and I am embarrassed after a very long time. I have been dreaming often but the intervals are long.

I used to have dreams especially in afternoons, that my eyes are stuck and I could not open it. It used to be horrible, thankfully that stopped sometime back.

Mungaru Male

What made it such a big hit almost cult like status like Prema Loka, Jogi and OM? The very fact that so much discussion and blogging is happening means a bigger hit. Could not resist the temptation to put thoughts again.

It surely cant be just be with simple story, good camera work and good songs.

Trying to analylze what went right for the movie some thoughts.
Story
You start liking happy to go lucky Preetam. You want him to win over the maiden Sanjana Gandhi. The director makes us feel that he is going to win her hand and he does it in steps. Even though there is no suspense he builds up ours, preetam's and nandhini's expectations. Finally the twist in the tale.
Here everybody is good no real villian. Even the supposed to be villian who gets beaten up comes as good fella after all.
You start thinking everybody is right in their way even though they all become hurdles to the hero.
You start empathising with everyone and feel poor fellow had no option.

Photography
Big plus

Songs
Some very good lyrics, melodius tunes and slick camera work kunidu, ondeondu, anisuthide..

Actors
Did fresh faces make the difference? Not great faces, but competent acting

External factors
Could it also be external factors like rise in kannada pride because of Cauvery issue, which made people go and watch good movie?
No competion from other good kannada movies? Isnt this normal?
No competetion from other language movies which are good? I have no idea about this.

Does anybody have answer?

Despite its simple plot, a low budget (only $375,000) and very short filming deadlines (originally 10 days), the movie maintains a high level of suspense due to taut direction and the script's refusal to resolve the central mystery. The film's success enabled the director to move beyond directing for television and establish himself as a competent film director.

l A typical ABCD setup contains one or more Access Points (APs) and one or more clients. An AP broadcasts its SSID (Service Set Identifier, "Network name") via packets that are called beacons, which are usually broadcast every 100 ms. The beacons are transmitted at 1 Mbit/s, and are of relatively short duration and therefore do not have a significant effect on performance. Since 1 Mbit/s is the lowest rate of ABCD it assures that the client who receives the beacon can communicate at at least 1 Mbit/s.Based on the settings (e.g. the SSID), the client may decide whether to connect to an AP. If two APs of the same SSID are in range of the client, the client firmware might use signal strength to decide which of the two APs to make a connection to. Since ABCD transmits in the air, it has the same properties as a non-switched wired Ethernet network, and therefore collisions can occur. Unlike a wired Ethernet, and like most packet radios, ABCD cannot do collision detection, and instead uses a packet exchange to try to avoid collisions.‘
